Somali Heritage on Display in 5 Star Hotels in Djibouti
What you see in these photos are pictures taken in displays at 5 star hotels in Djibouti. This heritage is not accessible to normal people who are not in these spaces. Yet today, with climate change and globalization of goods, very few are making this stunning art. Nevertheless, Djibouti’s Somali and Afar people are some of the finest artisans of Somali material culture. This is partly so because of the stability of this region while in most of the Horn loss of traditional knowledge occurred as a result of displacement of artisans in times of war. Horn Heritage is documenting objects like this so that they are accessible to everybody at least digitally and can be visited virtually. In this project we are partnering with the Djibouti National Museum.
