Who We are

Horn Heritage Foundation is a non-profit, apolitical organisation dedicated at preserving the cultural heritage of the Horn of Africa, with focus on the Somali speaking-region. It was created in 2011 by Dr Sada Mire, a renowned archaeologist who has conducted extensive research on the heritage and archaeology of the Horn.

What We Do

Protection, Education and Research

    • The first comprehensive mapping of Somaliland archaeological sites ever published
    • Collating and Digitizing artefacts originating from the Somali Horn of Africa
    • The training of over 1000 Somali students across the Somali region and globally
    • Damage documentation of heritage in Somalia, including Puntland.
    • Documentation of Somali songs and dances in the Somali region of Ethiopia
    • Documentation of Somali material art in Djibouti
    • The survey and documentation of Medieval Islamic kingdoms and sacred landscapes in Somaliland, including the drone archaeology of Aw-Barkhadle, capital of Adal Kingdom
    •  Evaluation of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Northeastern Province, Kenya
    • The digital recording and 3D virtual tours of Somaliland rock art sites
    • Site visits to the Somali region of Ethiopia, including Derbi Balaanbal
    • The contribution to numerous TV documentaries and radio programs dedicated to Somaliland heritage broadcasted by international media such as the BBC, National Geographic TV, CNN and China Global Television Network
    • Training of tour operators and guides and the first tourism feasibility study of Somaliland
    • The development of National Heritage Act of Somaliland
    • Regional cultural collaborative projects in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Somaliland  and Djibouti
